The Physical Education department forms an integral part of school life in respect of both the curriculum and extracurricular activities.

We have a good number of specialist staff who are supported by a large number of academic colleagues with knowledge and experience in specific areas. The department functions from a purpose built sports complex on site, with playing fields and astroturf pitches off site.

Staff

Our highly enthusiastic and specialised PE staff are supported by a large number of academic colleagues with excellent knowledge and experience in their specific sports. Pupils also benefit from highly qualified external coaches in rugby, hockey, netball, gymnastics and cricket.

Facilities

The department functions from a purpose built sports complex on site, with playing fields and artificial pitches off site. Our Sports Complex on site has a Sports Hall (incorporating badminton, netball, basketball or volleyball courts, an indoor hockey or 5-a-side soccer pitch, a fitness suite, a dance studio, climbing room, swimming pool and changing rooms. Outdoor facilities include 3 full sized netball courts, 4 small netball courts, 4 hard tennis courts and marked on the front field are 2 rounders pitches, a junior cricket square and 3 five a-side football pitches.

Our off site facilities include a games field (with 7 rugby pitches, 3 cricket squares, 2 football pitches, 5 rounders pitches and athletics facilities. We also have floodlit artificial pitches (offering 2 hockey pitches, 12 tennis courts or 4 five a side football pitches).

Curriculum

The curriculum embraces a rich combination of major games and more contemporary physical activities. PE and Games are compulsory in years 7 – 11. PE is also offered as a GCSE option for 4th and 5th Years.

Post 16, there is the AS/ A2 option of Physical Education alongside an extensive Games programme involving most sixth form students. Here there is an opportunity to select from a variety of activities including aerobics, climbing, yoga and martial arts or train and play for the school in hockey, netball, rugby and football.

In the lower school rugby, hockey, netball, tennis, athletics and cricket are taught in depth to years 7 – 10 and this is complemented by a balanced PE programme which aims to cover both the aesthetic and fitness aspects of the subject. PE activities include: swimming, health related fitness, badminton, gymnastics, basketball, dance, trampolining, climbing, volleyball, handball and self-defence.

Ethos

The department aims to promote positive attitudes towards active participation in Physical Education and Sport. All pupils are encouraged to follow a healthy active lifestyle, creating the opportunity for later involvement at either a recreational level or in a more competitive environment. We strive to enable individual pupils and school teams to reach their potential and compete at a high level.

Destinations

A number of our pupils go on to study Sports Science and related courses at University.

Representation

Many of our pupils achieve representation at district, county, region or national level in a variety of sports. In recent years Bablake has seen pupils reach national standards in hockey and rugby.

Co-Curricular

Pupils are encouraged to attend extracurricular activities at both team and recreational levels. A diverse extracurricular programme provides something for everyone alongside a comprehensive fixture list. Bablake School is proud of its school teams which exist at all age groups in athletics, cricket, cross country, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis.

Recreational Activities include: badminton, dance, fitness, swimming, climbing, table tennis, basketball and trampolining and gymnastics.

There is an opportunity for pupils to obtain life-saving and ASA swimming teacher’s qualifications.

Touring is an integral part of the department's programme. Boys’ and girls’ senior tours run every 3 years. Recent destinations have included South Africa, Sri Lanka and Singapore and Malaysia.
