Bablake Science departments teach their own scheme which broadly follows the ks3 science national curriculum. This gives a solid introduction to science, introducing key ideas and concepts in preparation to learn separate biology, chemistry and physics from 3rd Year.
For the Shells 2016/2017 the outline plan is:
- Introduction (All sciences)
- Cells (Biology)
- Particle Model (Chemistry and Physics)
- Movement and Speed (Physics)
- Human body (Biology)
- Electricity (Physics)
- Elements, compounds and mixtures (Chemistry)
- Levers and pressure (Physics)
- Revisions and completion of summer examination
- Species and evolution (Biology)
- Chemical and physical change (Chemistry)
Each topic will be about five weeks of learning, and one week of assessments. Comprising of 5 double lessons, 4 single lessons, one double revision lesson and a week of assessment comprising of an open book and closed book test (Assessment for Learning task).
For the 2nd Years 2016/2017 the outline plan is:
- Separation (Chemistry)
- Sound and electromagnets (Physics)
- Human body (Biology)
- Light and heat (Physics)
- Revision and completion of summer examination
- Ecosystem (Biology)
- Reactivity (Chemistry)
Shells will have the following exercise books:
- A5 red with gold Bablake embossed logo
- A5 silver with gold Bablake embossed logo
2nd years will have a variety of colours of A5 exercise books.
Each exercise book should have:
- In the front inside cover, students should have the Bablake Science Department Marking Policy.
- In the back inside cover, students should have a copy of the Periodic Table.
- In the back of the book there should be a Junior Science Safety leaflet.
- Each page should be numbered, by hand, in the bottom right corner. (This is so that when marking the books students can be given page references and it is possible to see if pages have been removed).
The exercise book should be a record of the pupils’ learning journey through Junior Science. To help with organisation, at the start of each new topic, the start sheet should be stuck into the exercise book.
Written work in exercise books will be marked using the following policy:
Attainment – Used along with test marks to assess knowledge and understanding.
All work has been completed to a high degree of accuracy.
A high percentage of the work has been completed to a high degree of accuracy.
An acceptable standard but work requires some corrections.
Below the standard expected. The work must be carefully looked at again and substantial corrections or additions made.
Substantially below the standard expected. The work must be repeated.
Effort – Used along with other evidence to assess presentation and industry.
Excellent effort, demonstrating care and attention to detail.
Good effort, above that which is expected.
Satisfactory, the task has been completed.
Unsatisfactory effort requiring immediate improvement.
The work must be repeated.
SPAG – Extended writing will be assessed for its spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Work with high degree of accuracy.
Work with a good degree of accuracy.
Work contains many mistakes.
The lessons are structured into a four part model:
- Starter – To get students settled, review previous material and provide material to start the lesson.
- Main section – This is an interactive section which will use a variety of pedagogical ideas including lecture style notes, practicals, demonstrations, group work, individual tasks and a focus on past paper questions.
- Plenary – An activity to assess the learning of the students in the lesson.
- Reflection – Review the lesson and consider which part(s) of the specification have been covered and key words met.
The course is fully supported with a lesson-by-lesson guide that includes a full lesson plan, overview lesson plan, PowerPoint and any relevant worksheets and video links.
Homework will be set in the double lesson and often will be focused on consolidating learning in the lesson or make connections between current material and previously studied material. If students fail to meet deadlines this will be recorded and persistent offenders will be will be subject to further action.

- Wider reading - The library has Horrible Science periodical delivered and a variety of KS3 text books.
- Junior Science Club – This is run by a variety of staff in Sc5 on Thursday lunchtimes. Look out for information in the bulletin to see what the topics and dates will be.
- Crest Club - CREST is a UK award scheme that recognises success, and enables students to build their skills and demonstrate personal achievement in project work. It offers educators an easy-to-run framework for curriculum enhancement and is student-led, which means that young people take ownership of their projects and choose to undertake them in areas they enjoy or see as relevant.
- Links with universities – Visiting speakers and outreach programmes from the Royal Society of Chemistry and Warwick University come into school to give lectures and workshops.
The short (grade) and full reports require an assessment of the attainment of the student with relation to their class mates. The school police uses the following assessment criteria to assign an attainment level. The full report will contain the results of the summer examinations. The summer examinations will be averaged and the result shown for both teachers.
