'Pupils have studied and masters instructed at Bablake since
1344. As an educational foundation it has lived and flourished for six centuries,
a gentle and influential flame of learning in the City of Coventry from
medieval times.
Yet strange how strongly and with what nostalgia in pupils' minds the actual
physical buildings are an integral, even major part of their conception
of 'school'. 1990 sees the centenary celebration of Bablake School's home
in its present buildings at Coundon. That one hundred years has been marked
by many achievements, and latterly, remarkable changes.
Peter Burden's fascinating account of this proud period does it all full
justice. It is both thorough and scholarly, yet spiced with anecdote and
humour. He brings these years to life with the characters he portrays and
incidents recalled.
For former pupils it is a treasury of memorabilia; the wider public will
receive it as a perceptive reflection of our rapidly altering world.'
Foreword written by Trevor Webb (ex Chairman of the Governors of Coventry
School).
