Valete- (15) Mr Steve Jackson (Former Head of Geography)

Staff Geography

The final retiree to feature in our 2013-14 'Valete' series is Mr Steve Jackson, who primarily taught Geography at Bablake for 39 years, having joined the school in September 1975, when half of our current staff may not even have been born!

This remarkable number of years’ service has been characterised by his passion for Geography, high expectations and dedication to all that he undertook. Dynamic for many in the classroom, his passion for the subject has inspired many pupils to study Geography beyond Bablake and indeed many of these have gone on to become teachers of the subject both here and around the UK.

Mr Jackson is no stranger to the local and regional media for being one of the first teachers to have established a Weather Station in a school. It surely must be unique for a school to have had this in operation for 37 years. Since humble beginnings in 1977, Bablake's Weather Station and Mr Jackson have achieved national recognition for this professional operation- a collaborative venture run with enthusiastic young weather-forecasters- which has been officially recognised by the Met Office.

Mr Jackson was made Head of Geography in 1992, and in his time at Bablake, he has also coached hockey (despite football being his first love), acted as the school’s Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, been Energy Warden and co-ordinator of Greenfeet, run a number of ski trips, and, at one stage, been master in charge of vehicles on school premises!

We are very pleased that he will maintain his links with Bablake through the Weather Station as our self-titled 'Climatologist'! We wish Mr Jackson a very happy and healthy retirement, much of which will be spent on the terraces at Aston Villa and in the company of his beloved grandchildren.
