19 Tries For Josh In Epic U12 Contest

Sports

It is highly unlikely the Bablake Rugby Twitter feed will ever 'break the internet', but there was certainly a frisson of excitement about the following post that appeared yesterday evening after the U12 games against KE Stratford:

'U12 vs KES Stratford: A team lost 46-0, B team lost 20-5, C team lost 47-0, D team drew 105-105, yes, really!! Josh Dobson- 19 tries!!!!'

Once it became known that the D team coaches were Mr Andrew Phillips (Master i/c Cricket and Hockey) and Dr Toby Smith (Head of RS and cricket aficionado), suspicion grew that a new hybrid game, Crugby, or even a proper T20 fixture had occurred.

The following report from Mr Phillips explains all:

'The U12Ds, Bablake's only undefeated team this season, faced a strong King Edward VI side. The game was 'free flowing' and Bablake moved the ball well into space and executed routines practised in training.

It's fair to say that tackling was minimal from both teams, however this produced an exciting game of 'end to end' rugby. The score swung in the favour of both teams throughout the match, with Stratford taking the lead on several occasions only for Bablake to strike back in the form of Josh Dobson.

The referee definitely helped produce an exciting game, however, a calculator or members of the Maths department would have been useful at times to keep track of the score!

A nail-biting end to the game saw the scores finish level at 105-105, with Josh scoring 19 out of Bablake's 21 scores.

It was a remarkable performance from Josh, a young man who only picked a rugby ball up for the first time a few months ago! Let's hope the U12 cricket team score as many runs in the summer as the rugby team score points!'

This will certainly be a game to remember for all those who witnessed it or participated in it. By yesterday evening, the score had even taken on its own element of urban myth with reports from Mr Jim Burns, Assistant Head and teacher of Economics, using his knowledge of inflation to boost the scores to 125 all!
