Further Help For The Revision Road- (1) Mr Tyas (Head of Mathematics)

Examinations Mathematics

Following yesterday's item on revision tips from Deputy Head Mr Chris Seeley and a piece in The i newspaper earlier this year by freelance journalist Russ Thorne featuring contributions from Bablake's teachers and former pupils, today we begin a short series of further revision tips.

Head of Mathematics Mr Kris Tyas was first to contribute to the research by Russ Thorne, suggesting the following:

  • Be organised! If you have a structured revision timetable, it never looks as daunting.
  • Get started! Jump out of bed and have a shower! Remember the first step of a marathon is the hardest. Start working! Don’t check your texts, don’t make a coffee- just grab a glass of water- and don’t have a leisurely breakfast. You may be able to do this in an hour as a reward? Don’t even plan at this time- work on a plan already set, so just start something. You will soon find you have done an hour's work and that will feel good.
  • The 600 counter! Put the number 600 up somewhere in your room and every time you ‘avoid’ doing work, drop the counter by one. As it nears 480, you have put your A grade in jeopardy. Set yourself a ‘reset’ condition- e.g. an A on a past paper will set it back up a little?
  • Do small chunks of revision: e.g. today I will sort out 'x' (any small topic) and not worry about my grade or the whole spec. Lots of small chunks quickly add up to a grade's worth of marks. This works particularly well for pupils that feel they are underperforming and are questioning the value of revision.
  • Earn your rewards: e.g. I have worked for five good hours today, therefore... But don't stay out late, ensure you have plenty of sleep and wake up bright and early ready for the next day of revision.
