Wheatleyan Team Is Highly Commended At Shine Media Awards

Sixth Form Media

Becky Williamson (Editor), Connor Putnam (Deputy Editor) and Hannah Corden (Photographer) represented the 2013-14 Wheatleyan team at the 5th Shine School Media Awards, held at Stationers' Hall in London.

The team enjoyed a 5.40am start from Coventry, survived the London commuter run and took a leisurely Le Pain Quotidien breakfast, before attending a Cartoon Workshop with Steve Marchant from the Cartoon Museum and a Social Media session with online journalist Sarah Douglas. Our team also had a practical run on a traditional printing press and networked well before the lunch and awards ceremony began in the impressive Great Hall.

The 2013-14 Wheatleyan was nominated in 5 categories: Best Original Artwork and Photography, Best Business Strategy, Best Environmental Strategy, Most Inspirational Teacher (Staff Editor Mr Mark Woodward) and Most Outstanding Pupil (Editor Becky Williamson).

While the team was unable to match Charlotte Loasby's 2014 win for Most Outstanding Pupil, we are delighted to report that the judges placed the magazine in the Highly Commended category for Best Original Artwork and Photography. Here the judges said: 'The Wheatleyan has a great range of original artwork and excellent photographs which tell a good story straightaway.' One also said they deserved more space (i.e. an A4 format) to have even more impact.

After some photographs at Stationers' Hall - an architectural and historical delight near St Paul's cathedral - the team made its way to Covent Garden for a celebratory meal and a glance round an amazing space exhibition installed within Brazilian footwear label Galeria Melissa's flagship store, before returning to Coventry bleary-eyed but proud of its achievements.

After reaching the final three years in a row, Bablake is already registered for the 2016 Shine SMA process and we look forward to presenting more of our student journalism to the esteemed judges that are drawn from across the media and printing worlds.
