Bablake Pupils And Chaplain Proudly Lead Prayers at Coventry Cathedral's Blitz Commemoration Service

Senior School Community

A group of Bablake pupils and our Chaplain Reverend Sacha Slavic were honoured to be asked to lead the prayers at Coventry Cathedral's recent civic service to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz.

Chaplain Reverend Slavic said: "Our pupils led the congregation in prayers reflecting on the events of 75 years ago as well as prayers for peace, justice and reconciliation today and hope for the future. Prayers were said for Archbishop Justin, Pope Francis and all religious leaders. The grace of wisdom was asked for our political and world leaders, as well as peace and reconciliation for our tormented world. A prayer partly delivered in Punjabi emphasised in the Sikh tradition our need to rely on God and act in order to create dignity, equality, justice and friendship for all. I then ended with a reflection, in English and French, on the harrowing recent events in Paris."

Mrs Helen Skilton, Head of History, who also accompanied the group, reported how she and the congregation were all touched by the poignancy of our pupils' prayers and impressed with their delivery. The minute's silence, broken by an air raid siren, and the cascade of poppies made by a local primary school also moved her.

The previous evening, a number of Bablake families attended a ceremony, part of the city's annual Peace festival, that marked the 75th anniversary with a 'human chain of light'.
