The Sugar Debate

Senior School Food and Textiles

With the Festive season drawing ever closer, one of the displays in our main corridor has been drawing even more interest.

Just before half-term, our Food and Textiles department set up a display showing the levels of sugar used in regular soft and fizzy drinks on sale at supermarkets. Mrs Alyson Heath (Food and Textiles) commented:

"I had seen the debate online and thought it would make an interesting talking-point. We spoke to a number of our pupils about what they enjoyed drinking, did some research on the sugar levels used and let the final display speak for itself!"

The reaction to the 'sugar debate' at Bablake this term and nationally via online discussion and broadsheet commentary has been one of overall surprise at the amount of sugar added to such a broad range of drinks, especially since many are marketed in the health category.
