Teachers' Mental Health Is Specific Interest For Former Pupil Headmaster

Old Wheatleyans Life Choices

Many former pupils find teaching offers superb opportunities for them to keep in touch with their academic interests and help pave the way for future generations.

Dr Mark Whalley, who left Bablake in 1987, is one such former pupil. After a degree in Mathematics and Physics at Keele University (where he also taught Physics), a PhD at the University of Birmingham, time spent in Service Children's Education in Cyprus and Germany, and extensive experience in the state sector, Dr Mark Whalley is now Headmaster at Rookwood School, a 3-16 independent, coeducational day and boarding school in Hampshire.

Bar his initial year in teaching, Dr Whalley's career has involved leadership roles throughout. Before becoming a headteacher, he had experience as a Head of Mathematics, Physics and Science as well as time spent as a Year Head.

With specific strengths in data management, analysis and tracking, timetabling, improving teaching and learning, staff management and developing middle leaders, it is no surprise Dr Whalley has been an education blogger and writer in a number of fields. His particular and current concern is the mental health of teachers and his blog, Teachers' Minds Matter, on this important issue in education is highly recommended.
