Bablake Hosts Science Technicians Conference

Senior School Science

Local support staff are set to gather at Bablake School today for the third annual conference for Science Technicians.

The event, which is sponsored by Breckland Scientific, sees technicians from across Coventry and Warwickshire attend an afternoon where Miss Sam Holyman (Junior Science Co-ordinator) and Miss Amy Hardie (Senior Science technician) demonstrate and coach technicians to learn new skills and develop their existing techniques. This free conference also offers the opportunity of networking and sharing good practice across many schools in the area and with professional bodies such as the Royal Society of Chemistry.

This years’ event is entitled 'Glorious Gases' and delegates will get the chance to make and explode bubbles after using toxic chemicals to remove the oxide layer from aluminum foil and see it react with the oxygen in the air! Miss Holyman said: “This highly successful event is going from strength to strength each year, with more people and more institutions coming each year. It is a fabulous opportunity to gain new skills and make links with other schools and organisations to aid in professional development of teachers as well as technicians”.

“We are also lucky to welcome Selena Kermode from the Royal Society of Chemistry, based at the University of Warwick, for the second year running! The event promises to be an explosive mix of learning and inspiration,” she added.
