Spirit Of The Old Wheatleyans RFC Receives Praise

Sports Old Wheatleyans

Today's Coventry Telegraph features Leigh Gallagher who has been playing rugby for the Old Wheatleyans RFC for the past 2 years.

After losing an eye 14 years ago and suffering other injuries in a severe car crash that claimed the lives of his two best friends, Leigh, who was an award winner at this year's Old Wheatleyans' End of Season dinner, was told he would never play rugby again.

In an excellent article by Antonia Bannister today, Leigh reports how the welcome and support from Old Wheatleyans players and supporters from across the world has been overwhelming. He says: 'Playing with the Old Wheats is like playing with your brothers. Anything that you're going through, they go through it with you.'

Paul Wright, Club Vice-Chairman, reported how Leigh's captain Joe Bristow gave him the captaincy on the 14th anniversary of the tragedy and spoke of the club's pride in Leigh. It is touching to report that Leigh scored a try, which he dedicated to his friends, in that match.

Today the Old Wheatleyans RFC play 1st and 2nd XV fixtures away against Dunlop. Kick off is at 2.15pm and all support is welcome.
