Former pupil and Rio Olympic Gold Medal winner Nick Skelton crowned 2016 with third place in the BBC's prestigious 'Sports Personality of the Year' competition last night.

Interviewed later in the evening on BBC Radio 5 Live, the remarkable equestrian Nick Skelton commented: "It is an honour to be standing there with so many great sportsmen and sportswomen. I think there were a few times where I was told by the surgeons not to ride again but I had a horse in the stable that I knew was promising, so I found a surgeon in Europe that said yes and really that was the only answer I was looking for. To be in the top three shows that people are taking notice and it is a great accolade."

Third behind three times winner Andy Murray and runner up Alistair Brownlee, Nick Skelton, Team GB's oldest medal winner in Rio, was an impressive representative for senior sportsmen and sportswomen. In such a stellar year for Team GB and UK sport, his third place is an even more impressive result too, allowing for the competition he defeated.

Proudly watching on at the ceremony was the youngest Team GB medal winner and current Bablake pupil Kare Adenegan, who surely will be a keen favourite to be a gold medal winner at the 2020 Paralympics.
