Wind Tunnel Tests For F1 In Schools Prototypes

Senior School Engineering

Coventry University's Engineering department proved a vital pitstop for our F1 in Schools teams.

Towards the end of last term, members of our three F1 in Schools teams visited Coventry University's Engineering department to use its Mercedes F1 designed wind-tunnel.

Jakevir Shoker (Atomic Force), Adam Dickinson, Rob Tyas and Rajan Vraitch (Falcons), and Harry Loud and George Evans (Liberty) all took part in the session. Using 3D printed models of their car designs in the quarter-scale wind-tunnel, they tested their prototypes with a series of speeds up to 90mph in order to measure the aerodynamic drag force on the cars.

There was plenty of healthy competition between the teams as to whose design would come out on top, with Liberty’s design ultimately being crowned most aerodynamic.

Mr Sam Williams (Design Technology) added: "There is still plenty of work to do before the regional final later this month, with all three teams working hard to finish the construction of their racing cars models and ensure their portfolios are up to scratch. Thanks must go to lecturer Martin Lander for co-ordinating the visit and wind-tunnel technician Phil Garner for his expert assistance during the session."

We wish the Bablake teams all the best for 'race day' and look forward to reporting on their progress.
