EES Team All Set For Assessment and Celebration Day

Senior School Engineering

Yesterday, Bablake's Engineering Education Scheme team enjoyed a dummy run presenting its impressive project at Arup's Solihull campus.

Arup's founder Sir Ove Arup stated 'to do work of quality, we must have people of quality' and Bablake's Lower Sixth students certainly did him proud with their presentation - the culmination of over 8 months' work on the project, which included a carefully plotted gantt chart, weekly meetings in school, excellent mentoring from our Arup link engineers and Bablake's DT department, and a residential at the University of Birmingham - in short, at least 100 hours of their own time devoted to the exercise.

Lucie Barnes, Tommy Knight, Abilan Vijayaratnam and Luke Wyman's confident explanation, both verbally and on screen, of their A120 Bypass and Flood Alleviation Scheme for Little Hadham in Hertfordshire was highly commended both by their Arup mentors, engineers Phil Brunson and Chirag Marjaria, but also those who are involved with the actual Environment Agency project.

Bablake's team arrived early to meet with their link engineers and had a chance to discuss the presentation exercise over a buffet lunch. Once in the lecture theatre, our team was able to watch two other schools present their projects. Each team was also questioned by professional engineers and given feedback for the EES Celebration and Assessment day which takes place next week.

Mr Mark Woodward (Head of Careers), who attended alongside Mr Sam Williams (DT), commented: 'I was delighted with the team's performance. It was the first time I had seen the project presentation, but it was obvious how well the team had worked together and kept to the project schedule over the last two terms.

Each member of Bablake's team was confident with his or her material, projected the information expertly and engaged the audience with the material. I felt they all used the on-screen information intelligently and answered all questions posed with confidence. Presenting in front of any audience, let alone professionals with years of field experience, is never easy, but the team was excellent. The warm delivery betrayed no nerves and I am sure this experience will have given Abilan, Lucie, Luke and Tommy even more confidence for next week when the presentation will be delivered to the final project assessors.

It is clear that EES is a fabulous opportunity to gain real experience of both team project skills and the world of engineering. Under Mr Chris West (Head of Design Technology), Bablake has been very fortunate to have had over 20 years' experience of the scheme and its success in inspiring numerous former pupils to work in that area is unparalleled.

I am looking forward to the Assessment and Celebration day, where again it will be another day to be proud of our Bablake students!"

We wish Bablake's team all the very best for Tuesday's EES and Celebration day, and look forward to a report on the experience in this term's issue of The Lion.
