Bablake Sikh and Hindu Society's Charity Success

Senior School Charity

This year Bablake’s Sikh and Hindu society raised an outstanding £1119.52 for Save the Children India.

The society believes every child deserves the best chance for a bright future which is why they decided to support Save the Children India, who are fiercely committed to ensuring children not only survive, but thrive.

The Bablake Sikh and Hindu Society is run by Bablake Sixth Form students, Jasneet Grewal, Apeksha Chohan, Harkiran Sundal and Navpreet Grewal. One of the major events for the society is their hour long Diwali celebration. Diwali is the festival of light celebrated by Hindu’s and Sikhs around the world. The celebration aims to showcase the schools best Indian performers and it didn’t disappoint! Many pupils attended the celebration alongside staff, both indulged in the Indian culture and cuisine on offer, including sampling the delights of samosas, spring rolls and an Indian sweet delicacy; Jalebi!

Many Shell students participated in the event with performances from Kiran Bharaj on the Harmonium, a Dhol performance by Jay Singh Sandhu and Dylan Singh, Punjabi/Hindi singing by Seeya Lakhanpal and Tia Sadh and Bhangra dancing by Biran Singh Deol. To top off the event Karina Mistry celebrated her final year at Bablake with a wonderful Indian traditional dance.

Organisers Apeksha Chohan and Jasneet Grewal commented; "The whole celebration was completely enthralling and the Shell pupils, who performed and helped with the beautiful henna designs, were the heart and soul of the event! We'd like to thank everyone who’s donated to Save the Children India. We are so proud of everyone involved.”

As well as the Diwali celebrations the society also organised a Krispy Kreme donut sale and a Christmas Jumper Day which was enjoyed by the whole school.

Mr L Atwal, one of the teachers involved in organising the event, said; "I am very impressed with the leadership and teamwork skills shown by the society and I am delighted that so much was raised for Save the Children India. This event topped all previous events in terms of the amount of money raised – well done!”
