Bablake Pair Progress to Oxford Debating Finals

Senior School Co-curricular

Congratulations to Abinaya and Eva who teamed up to win a place through to the finals of the Oxford Union Schools’ Debating Competition.  They were one of four pairs representing Bablake at the regional round, held at St Paul’s School, Edgbaston on Wednesday, 23rd January.  Everyone performed well and learnt a great deal about the art of debating in the British Parliamentary style but it was Abinaya and Eva who were among only eight pairs selected from a total entry of sixty five to go through to compete in Oxford in March. As part of this honour they may get the opportunity to speak in the famous Union debating chamber, which over the years has been graced by such luminaries as American presidents and Nobel Prize winners.

Our debaters and public speakers have been very busy this year so far with pupils competing in the Coventry Festival of Speech and Drama, the Coventry City Council Schools Debating contest, The English Speaking Union Schools’ Mace Debating Competition and both the intermediate and senior section of the Rotary Youthspeaks competition.
