BASE team Competes in Nationals

Senior School Junior School

Well done to both of our BASE teams for their hard work in the competition this year.

Both teams would have made it to the final but only one team per school was allowed to progress. A huge achievement from everyone!

The National Finalists competed this week in the virtual competition – they narrowly missed out on any awards but they were well prepared and were extremely good in the session. They wanted to share their experience here:

"Our experiences in the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) BASE National Business and Accounting Skills Education competition were highly enjoyable, as it allowed us to show off our strengths ranging from teamwork and planning to communication and resilience. We were keen to get involved in the competition when it was suggested on our Lower Sixth Form online team. Given the situation we were in at the time with the Covid-19 pandemic and the national lockdown, the BASE competition provided us with something to do as well as being something that will improve our CVs for our future.

"For the first stage of the competition, we encountered and solved several business and accounting scenarios. The purpose of these scenarios was to see our teamwork and adaptability to different business situations, as we attempted to put ourselves in the shoes of the hypothetical business manager. This meant combining our knowledge of business procedures and gaining the best outcomes considering co-workers views and morals. The second stage of the competition was to prepare a five minute presentation, advising a business on how to proceed based off a given case study. Our question was focused on a combination of accounting and logistics. We worked together to provide the most thorough and detailed plan for the hypothetical business which would have usually been presented in person. However, due to the national lockdown, this presentation was done virtually.

"Recently we received an email from BASE congratulating us on our accomplishments on reaching the National Final. Although we are disappointed that we could not go in person to the event in London, as would happen normally, due to the current situation, we are pleased to have been given the opportunity to show our skills once again. The final stage is the highest finishing 24 teams from across England and Wales that entered the competition. We are delighted to be representing Bablake amongst some of the best schools across the country and are hoping to make the school proud of our efforts on the 16th June, albeit in a virtual environment.

"For some added incentive, the National Champions of 2021 will receive an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil each, £4000 cash for the students’ school, a full day employability session and a trip to London to meet the ICAEW CEO, Michael Izza. Runner’s up will also receive an iPad each and a half day employability session. We recommend aspiring business or economics sixth form students at Bablake to check out the competition and consider participating. Not only does it provide employability skills, but it also  provides a resource of revision for topics you learn about in Business and Economics."
