A New Musical Chapter at Bablake

July 10, 2025

Earlier this year, Bablake had the privilege of welcoming a traditional Gamelan orchestra, a vibrant and historic instrument into our music department.

Since then, pupils from Year 3 to Year 8 have had the opportunity to explore the distinctive sounds and rhythms of the Gamelan, adding a new dimension to their musical learning.

The project reached a special milestone this term, as our Year 10 musicians composed and performed an original piece titled Peace and Reconciliation. Inspired by Coventry’s identity as a City of Peace and Reconciliation, the composition reflects both the cultural heritage of Gamelan music and the values we hold as a school and city.

The piece had its debut performance at our Summer Chamber Music Concert, where we welcomed Rev Canon Sacha Slavic and Rev Kate Massey, Canon for Culture and Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral. Their presence made the occasion especially meaningful, as the performance resonated with themes that are rooted in Coventry’s spirit.

This project marks the beginning of a new musical chapter at Bablake, one that connects pupils to global traditions while encouraging creativity and collaboration.
