30th Year At The Edinburgh Fringe - (3) Marketing The Show!

Senior School

If there are 2000 shows and in excess of 30,000 performances at the Edinburgh Fringe, it is fair to say acting may be the least of your problems!

While the quality of your show is crucial, marketing the performance is imperative and the cast of Bablake's 30th consecutive production at the Fringe has been hard at work cajoling residents and visitors to Edinburgh to step into its studio!

The first two performances of Sherlock have drawn very receptive and welcoming audiences of 22 and 33 respectively in Nicolson Square's Lime Studio, a venue that holds 50. Head of Careers Mr Mark Woodward who is one of four members of staff accompanying the students reports on the marketing campaign:

"Our actors travelled to the show, dressed in their distinctive 'Sherlock' hoodies and, since arriving in Edinburgh, have been decked out in their branded T shirts. Departing Director Ms Caroline Farmer ensured the cast all had period costume and a Sherlock pipe, deerstalker and magnifying glass to produce for photoshoots and market the show both on public transport and the Royal Mile.

Trusty staple guns have been in action pinning posters to pillars, the public has been warmly leafleted and if you blinked, you might think you were travelling with the Bronte sisters since the daily commute to the Fringe has been in costume.

The first morning's 'improv acting' on the Royal Mile drew warm praise, while the inspired change to freeze-frame scenes in costume yesterday offered great humour and elicited intense interest.

As well as the physical presence, there has been tireless online marketing on a good number of social platforms, with Twitter leading the way promoting the show and engaging other performers. We were especially delighted to receive a mention on national Radio 2 about 'Sherlock' and retweets from fellow Fringe performers such as Dr Ahmed Kazmi and Shappi Khorsnandi."

We wish the cast all the very best for their performance at 11.30am today and the rest of the week. We understand former pupils from the 60s all the way through to more recent leavers have been in attendance to support the current cast.
