Another Win For Illustrious lllustrator and Author

Senior School Old Wheatleyans

On the day former pupil Lauren James publishes her second novel 'The Last Beginning (The Next Together)', we are delighted to announce that Old Wheatleyan and former World Book Day illustrator Alex T Smith has received another accolade.

Alex's 'Claude Going For Gold' was announced as winner of the 5-9 year old fiction category at the 2016 Sainsbury's Children’s Book Awards. Winning this accolade is just the latest in an impressive portfolio of awards that Alex, who left Bablake in 2003, has gathered for his excellent illustrations and stories.

What is really encouraging too for all teachers promoting design, reading and literacy is the news from Mr Pete Selby, Head of Music and Books at Sainsbury’s, that book sales nationally are up 6% across the country (and 11% across Sainsbury's). This surely demonstrates our youngsters are still very much enjoying the power of illustration and words; employers will be especially looking forward to working with these creative minds in the future.
