Sixth Form Students Become Surgeons For The Day

Sixth Form Science

Bablake recently hosted an Operating Theatre Live event which was open to all Sixth Form students in the area.

The event was aimed at students considering a career in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science. During the day students took on the role of a surgeon, practicing real surgical techniques on real specimens. They dissected a head, lungs, heart and many more organs. They had an opportunity to inflate a pair of lungs and observe how the lungs expand. They learnt about anaesthetists and infection control. As well as dissecting the organs they were given a wealth of knowledge about the role of the particular organ and certain problems which can occur with it. Many Bablake students also took part in the afternoon session which covered emergency medicine and learnt about amputations.

The session concluded with the leaders of the event sharing information in preparation for the UKCAT and BMAT tests. Students were also provided with useful tips for interview. It was an excellent day and our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the event. Many thanks to Mrs Tumber (Head of Sixth form) and Mr Kalsi for hosting the event.
