Pride In Award-Winning Bablake Engineering Education Scheme Team

Senior School Design Technology

Bablake's 2015-16 Engineering Education Scheme team did the school proud at this year's assessment and celebration day. Mr Chris West, Head of Design Technology, reports further:

"After six months of hard work, early morning breakfast meetings, and a two day residential workshop, Bablake's Engineering Education Scheme team came to the end of the road with its assessment and celebration day at Solihull. The team of four Lower Sixth Form pupils had been working in conjunction with sponsor company, Arup, on a scheme to develop a new station at Curzon Street in Birmingham as part of the HS2 rail scheme.

During October and November, we had weekly meetings with link engineers Sam and George, challenging the team to come up with a development scheme which considered the roof, concourse and platform arrangements. At the residential workshop hosted by the University of Birmingham in December, a start was made on producing a detailed model to showcase the team's ideas. Last term saw the production of a highly detailed project report which was then presented to a team of engineers as part of the assessment.

The assessment day saw the team come away with a host of awards which included a Gold CREST award and a Gold Industrial Cadet award, the first time this has been awarded to any Bablake pupil. The icing on the cake for the team was to win the JCB team building challenge on the day and also to be judged as 'Best Display' by their peers from all the other schools represented. Special thanks go to Arup, sponsoring our team for the 16th consecutive year, and their engineers for encouragement and insight into the world of engineering."

This is excellent news! Following last term's excellent CREST assessments for our Junior scientists and the receipt of two Gold certificates awarded to sixth formers Ruby Griffin and Anna Knight in this year's Royal Society of Chemistry UK Chemistry Olympiad, 2016 has once again been an excellent year for STEM provision at Bablake.
