What a Difference Four Years Make

Senior School Sport

Four years ago Bablake's Kare Adenegan was watching the 2012 London Paralympics, yesterday she won a T34 100m silver medal in Rio.

Coming second, winning silver, recording a new personal best, Kare's performance really was following her dream script and we congratulate her on this amazing achievement.

Kare's rise to success has been phenomenal over the last four years. Seeing athletes take part in the London games inspired her to take up wheelchair racing and from that moment, she has been regularly beating personal targets and gaining media recognition with wins at the London Marathon and national and international athletics meetings. She is still the only racer in the last seven years to have beaten legendary athlete Hannah Cockcroft MBE in competition.

Her local club, Godiva Harriers Wheelchairs Racing Academy, coach Job King, and various local and national sponsors will be just a few of the people across the UK and the world who will have been so proud and so impressed to see Kare win a silver medal last night.

Mr Mark Woodward (Head of Careers) surely sums up the thoughts of the Bablake community, saying: "Kare's achievement last night was no surprise, which in itself is a massive tribute to how she has coped with the media pressure in the build up to the games. To have been selected for Rio was an amazing feat, but to have won a medal in the first race at her first Paralympics is awesome.

Kare always acts with maturity and immense humility. She has believed in her ability and delivered under intense pressure - everyone is so pleased for her. Four years ago, she was inspired by others; since that moment, she has been and continues to be an inspiration for her peers, her teachers and all those younger than her. She is achieving her dream and her example, in turn, cannot fail to inspire others to follow her. What a superb role model she is!"

We wish Kare every success for the rest of the games, where she will be competing in the T34 400m and 800m later this week. She is already a winner in our eyes, though we would not be surprised if, having won silver, she will now be going for gold!
