Bablake Twitterati- (3) Careers

Social Media Careers

One of the first departments at Bablake to use Twitter to its advantage was the Careers department, joining the site in 2009! We asked Mr Mark Woodward, Head of Careers, to explain how the site has been of use for Bablake's pupils:

'Ever since the instigation of Friends Reunited and latterly Facebook, we have always looked to find the benefits of online networking for our pupils, believing that, following the principles of I Could, inspiration for current pupils so often comes from the example and experience of others who have already faced career choice challenges.

The benefits of networking of course have never been in doubt in every profession! It is likely every adult would be able to offer examples of where the people he or she has known have been just as vital, if not more so, than his or her knowledge.

Twitter is a natural extension of our own personal network and by following companies or individuals of importance or interest, every pupil (current or former) is able to build knowledge and a network.

Use of specific hashtags also enables pupils to gather further information about professions and the job opportunities.

Looking at Twitter as a potential worldwide open portfolio also allows pupils to advertise their potential skills and talents in any professional field either to a world audience or one more specifically tailored to their individual needs.

We have been great advocates of using Twitter to find out instant information, but the ability to advertise skills is very exciting... as long as it is done in a professional manner.

Allied with LinkedIn, we believe Twitter is an essential part of every pupil's employability toolbox.'
