Science INSET Proves Distractingly Chemical

Senior School Chemistry

After the great success of last year’s 'Chemistry for the Brave', where local science technicians networked and had the opportunity to try their hand at spectacular and technically difficult fire and ice demonstrations, a similar group came to Bablake this week for an afternoon of colourful Chemistry that was distractingly practical, informative and, dare we say, sexy!

Over 15 science technicians from local schools attended the presentation on how to safely prepare, deliver and clear up a variety of exciting demonstrations. The presentation included how to make a transition metal volcano, how to make hot ice and even how to change 1p pieces into silver and gold coins!

The event, organised by Bablake's Senior Technician Mrs Bev Lewell and teacher Miss Sam Holyman (Chemistry), was supported by Breckland Scientific Supplies Ltd.

Mrs Lewell commented: 'The event has grown since last year, with our Whoosh bottle video clip drawing audiences from across the world! It is always great to make links with other local schools, as this allows the sharing of ideas and development of practical Chemistry for secondary schools.’

Lynne Purshouse, Breckland Scientific's National Events Manager, added: 'Once again everything exceeded my expectations. At Breckland Scientific, we are a small company working closely as a team to benefit all; to see such synergy in an education establishment is refreshing. I hope that the informal partnership we have will continue for many years. It is a true pleasure to work with professionals of such calibre.'
