Hockey Boys Win Gripping National Plate Contest

Senior School Sport

The final moments of yesterday's boys' hockey National Plate 3rd round fixture, between our 1st XI and Bryanston School, seemed far too long for spectators and players alike.

With captain Tom Betts in the sin bin for five minutes following an over zealous challenge that merited a yellow card, our 1st XI saw a 3-1 lead pegged back by a sweeping move and impressive finish from Bryanston. That is when the defence and midfield, with Iain Suren standing out on the left and Julian Wreford marshalling in the middle, stood firm and allowed our captain to return for the final moments to enjoy a dramatic win.

Bablake had led from the start with a goal by Cameron Park. Bryanston's pressure eventually led to an equaliser despite staunch defence, however Brad McKenzie-Quinn's excellent individual goal restored our lead almost immediately. At half time, there was immense belief in our team that the match could be won and the second half followed the pattern of the first with Bryanston enjoying more possession. Our opponents however fell further behind after a fine strike from Cameron Park, converting a penalty corner.

Fixtures come thick and fast in this competition and coach Mr Andrew Phillips (i/c Hockey and Cricket) saw his troops beat Bloxham School on Monday. We have heard no Premier League manager style complaints about his players being tired, while the squad has excelled without Nick Payne, injured against Bloxham.

In fact Mr Phillips commented: "I am extremely proud of the 1st XI for overcoming such a strong Bryanston side. Hard work and commitment have paid off in the National Plate, with us stringing together a series of wins against Warwick, Bloxham and now Bryanston. Despite a series of injuries, the squad has rallied and produced some of the performances of the season."

England Hockey will announce the draw for Round 4 on Monday 29th February. Bablake's 1st XI is in the final 14 and we wish the team all the best for its next game.
