Bablake Girls Continue Junior School Cross Country Success

Over 300 girls from 40 primary schools gathered at Bablake's playing fields in  Coundon for this year’s Coventry Schools Girls' Cross Country event last Saturday.

The course had been made much tougher as rain soaked the fields. Conditions underfoot challenged everyone, from the hundreds of supporting friends and relatives to the runners themselves, who all showed great determination to conquer their discomfort and sustain their efforts.

In the A Race, Eloise Green from Stivichall held off Jessica McFadden from Sacred Heart and Casey Branch from Finham to take the honours. The top 10 girls came from 10 different schools – it was great to see the different team colours cross the line in quick succession.

The team competition saw Bablake retain the trophy they won last year, led home by Krista Bennett in fifth place. Stivichall was placed a close second with Willenhall, continuing its good form from the boys' competition, completing the podium.

In the B Race, Bablake runners dominated with Daniella Bleach quickly showing a clean pair of heels to the rest of the pack to come home first and Kyra Turnock, also from Bablake, placed third. Inbetween them came Lydia Hall from Allesley. The B Team competition again saw Bablake come out winners with Willenhall taking second place. It was good to see Manor Park battling to equal third place, up from 15th last year. Coundon Court clearly liked the local nature of the event and ran with much determination to tie for third. Many of the B Team racers were from Years 3, 4 and 5, so it will be great to see future champions emerge over the coming years.

Well done once again to Carol Rees, Tony Pedley and all the Coventry Primary Schools Sports Committee for putting on such a splendid event. Over 300 Coventry girls had a day to remember.
