Junior Science CREST Students Excel

Senior School Science

16 students from our Shells through to the Fifth Year had their CREST project assessed this week. All of them passed with many being awarded a grade above their age, which saw a final tally of 4 gold awards, 10 silver and 2 bronze.

Carole Gallant from Create a Future, who came into school to assess the projects, made especial comment on the wide variety and passion of the students. She was particularly taken with the 'Pigeon Behaviour' project by Third Year Sathvika Krishnan; in fact she assessed it at Gold standard, which is the level usually reserved for Sixth Form students.

These pupils attended CREST Club over the last two terms and their projects have investigated an exciting range of topics. Some researched what would be the best hair straightening product, while others examined the composition of good oral rehydration therapy.

Miss Sam Holyman, Junior Science Co-coordinator, said: “It has been wonderful to work with so many enthusiastic youngsters and give them the opportunity to research a topic that is of interest to them and outside the constraints of the curriculum. All the students have worked hard and the projects they have produced are very interesting and inspiring – I am extremely proud of them all.”

The students may also use their CREST award as the 'skills' element at the same level of their Duke of Edinburgh award. To complete their projects, each completed experiments and researched using the internet, text books and interviews with professionals; they then created a report to explain what they had discovered, while conveying their passion for science and engineering.
