Rachel's Excellence For Design Is Recognised

Senior School Design Technology

Congratulations to Upper Sixth Form pupil Rachel Faulkner, who has been awarded a book prize by The Furniture Makers' Company for excellence in Design and Technology.

Head of Design Technology, Mr Chris West, commented: "Rachel has been an outstanding Design Technology student throughout her time at Bablake and it is excellent to see her work rewarded. For her Lower Sixth project, she chose to design a lamp using predominantly metal for the extendable lamp holder and concrete for a base. It also included some 3D printing for a bracket.

It was natural for her to progress and move on to work in mainly wood for her final piece in the Upper Sixth as part of her Design and Technology 3D Design A level. She has made excellent use of old solid iroko work tops that have been removed from one of our school science laboratories which is being refurbished. Her recycled project is a hall stand - a functional, useful object, which will remind her of her time at Bablake for many years to come!

Rachel used a wide range of skills - ranging from hand cut joints to machine work for precise detail - to produce her project, and her handicraft was all completed to a very high standard. Her work displays all her strengths, from design and graphics through to workshop skills, and her final piece will be an inspiration for many pupils throughout the school."

Rachel's work will also now be entered as part of a national competition to discover and support outstanding design work in schools.
