Local Guides Focus On Science

Science Outreach

Science was the focus this half term at a local Guide Unit as everyone worked at achieving their Science Badge and completing the Go For It! Experiment challenge.

Miss Holyman, Bablake's Junior Science Co-ordinator, went to the 10th Leamington (St Mark's) Girl Guides, who meet on a Tuesday night in Leamington Spa, to help them explore forensic science, static electricity and take their own biometric measurements.

Miss Holyman said: “The guides were all so enthusiastic and they were a delight to work with. We explored how to take fingerprints and analyse their structure, experienced static electricity using balloons and a van der graaf generator, and measured lots of different things such as height, pulse oxygen saturation levels, mass, blood pressure and peak flow.”

Guide leader Samantha Rivera, added: "It was great to have a scientist to come in and use equipment which we do not usually have access to.  A big thank you to Bablake for supporting us and I am delighted to report that all of the Guides achieved both badges. Miss Holyman was an inspirational guest speaker, who really brought the science to life. The Guides have been really enthusiastic about the session and want me to invite her back again! We have also had super feedback from parents."

Guides are girls who are given the chance to explore their individual skills and abilities, and try out new challenges as part of a team. They may get involved in anything from adventure sports to performing arts, travel and community action projects.
