Enthusiasm For Chemistry Club Erupts

Archive Archive

Philip Wild and sisters Smiriti and Anuriti Aojula led an exciting session of the ever popular Chemistry Club under the watchful eye of Mr Inderpal Kalsi, the new young addition to the Chemistry department.

The first of two experiments to fascinate the Shells was a baking soda and acid volcano. As the baking soda reacted with the acid, a chemical reaction took place resulting in the formation of froth. With red food colouring already added to the soda, the froth very much replicated the lava from a volcano.

The second experiment was the combination of coke and Mentos sweets where the surface of the Mentos reacts with the coke to form a huge eruption. The pupils added the sweets all in one attempt and had to retreat immediately as the reaction was very fast, just like a firework.

Mrs Barbara Lewell, one of our laboratory technicians, is thanked for her support and willing assistance.
